About

Who we are

↑ Top

The Control line focuses on modelling and designing feedback systems for stability and robustness, contributing to resilient industrial infrastructures aligned with the energy and green transition challenge.

The group has validated advanced techniques including sliding mode control, model predictive control and barrier-function-based adaptive approaches, while systematically enhancing classical PID controllers with mathematical rigour.

To facilitate global dissemination, the development of low-cost experimental platforms has been prioritised. They are built and tested at LabTECH, the Technologic Development and Control Laboratory at ESEIAAT (Terrassa), to support the theory developed and to inform new experimental platforms.

Robust feedback design, from model to experiment

The line works within control theory, with emphasis on robust control, fault detection and parametric identification. Controllers are designed with proofs of stability and then validated on experimental platforms.

It is structured around four complementary expertise nodes, listed below.

Convergence with WinTurCoM

A recent convergence has started the study of thermoplastic composites: robust control strategies for systems with embedded sensors and coupled thermal-mechanical dynamics, moving from modelling toward TRL 4-5 validation with Hardware-in-the-Loop systems and physics-informed AI.

Experiments run at LabTECH (Laboratori de Desenvolupament Tecnològic i Control), at ESEIAAT/UPC, room TR45-144, Colom 1, 08222 Terrassa. The laboratory is coordinated by Leonardo Acho and Gisela Pujol-Vázquez.

Platforms

Structural Health MonitoringDamage detection with in-place piezoelectric sensors. A one-bar setup checks the principle with the residual-signal technique, and a three-bar setup works toward a low-cost analogue detection circuit without an ADC.LabTECH →
Electronic ThrottleA DC motor drives a throttle valve, with a position sensor and a return spring. Used to validate adaptive second-order sliding mode control with barrier functions and parametric identification.LabTECH →
Magnetic Stabilization of a DC MotorA flexible beam with a magnet at its free end is attached to the motor shaft. A vibrational controller built with operational amplifiers gives a low-priced platform for teaching control and electronics.LabTECH →
Aerial DeviceA ball-and-beam benchmark where a twin-rotor system sets the angle of the beam, with the ball held at a set-point under external perturbations and unmodelled uncertainty.LabTECH →
Electromagnetic Levitation (MagLev)A low-cost magnetic levitation platform built with an Arduino and a Raspberry Pi, running a discrete-time semi-active PID controller with resetting actions.LabTECH →
Mechanical Ventilator Best Paper AwardA low-cost, open-source ventilator built from commercial spare parts, with pressure monitoring that alerts clinicians in real time. Developed during the COVID-19 shortage of ventilators.LabTECH →
Electrical Impedance TomographyA non-invasive technique to visualise changes in electrical impedance. A residual signal detects a new object in the container, as a proof of concept for early breast cancer detection.LabTECH →
